Finding the right therapist is an important first step toward better living and discovering all that psychotherapy and counseling have to offer. I will take a straight forward, collaborative, and empathic approach, rooted in a broad range of clinical and life experiences, supporting clients of all ages and backgrounds as they address their mental health concerns and navigate life's challenges. Together, we will focus on practical and evidence-based strategies to clarify goals, build insight, and create meaningful change at your own pace.
Whether you want to alleviate pain and distress, live a more meaningful and fulfilling life, disrupt dysfunctional and destructive patterns and behaviors, or improve your key relationships, I will attempt to establish a tailored approach to address your specific needs, goals, and circumstances.
Life can be hard! But often we learn more from our trials and tribulations than from our successes. Talking with a trusted confidant outside of your circle of family and friends, which is what I will aim to be, can offer new insights and perspectives! Let me join with you on your journey as you set out to make real change and improve your quality of life!

The first task in therapy is to get acquainted and begin to build the foundation for future work and growth. I will attempt to join with you, wherever you are, and establish an environment of safety and trust, the essential ingredients for self-exploration, authentic connection, and deeper understanding. Together, we will identify your needs and use evidence-based strategies to meet your specific goals at your own pace. Whether you want to alleviate pain and distress, to live more meaningful and fulfilling life, to disrupt dysfunctional and destructive patterns and behaviors, or to improve your key relationships, I will work with you to address these problems in a personalized and culturally competent manner. I will take a straight-forward, collaborative, and empathic approach, rooted in a broad range of clinical and life experiences supporting clients of all ages and backgrounds as they address their mental health concerns and navigate life’s challenges.
When I am not doing therapy, I find great fulfillment and pleasure in new experiences, meeting unusual and interesting people, natural beauty and landscapes, and the simple joys of life. I like learning about history and different cultures, eating real food of all kinds, generally being active (e.g., rowing, kayaking, sailing, running, and hiking, etc.) and reading and listening to classic fiction. I enjoy challenging myself in the kitchen, from striving for the perfect egg, potato, or soup, to baking the perfect sourdough loaf, baguette, or Philly pretzel. I am fond of the growth mindset and the process of striving for “perfection” in various activities where none exists. Though I seldom find the time, I aspire to travel more, paint and write, learn Spanish, and grow my favorite vegetables, etc. I am also a passionate-in-the-playoffs, but mostly casual, Philadelphia sports fan and enjoy watching Premier League soccer.

I strive to be fully open and inclusionary to all human cultures, identities, relationships, and experiences
I recognize that maintaining and developing cultural competence is an ongoing and active process
I have worked the longest with adolescents with behavioral and emotional problems (and their families), particularly those who likely have good reason to be angry and distrustful of adults or authority figures.
After college and before I earned my Master’s in Counseling Psychology, I lived and worked in a residential wilderness program and accredited middle and high school for “severely emotionally disturbed” adolescent boys for 5 years. Not only did we build and maintain our living quarters without nails or modern tools, chop our own wood for heat and cooking, and embark on extended multi-week canoeing and hiking expeditions, but we resolved differences and issues (adults and kids alike) in a truly experiential, process group therapy format. I witnessed dramatic change over time with this very difficult population and there was never a fight! I saw firsthand the healing power of a positive peer culture that was cultivated and maintained over months, one kid at a time, by overcoming challenges and adversity and working together in a structured group environment.
We valued and treated the whole individual, and diagnoses and medications were secondary (most eventually discontinued their medications). This experience shaped me deeply and much of my subsequent interest in psychology and therapy, academic focus, and immersion in the often-juxtaposed medical model (i.e., my internship at UF & Shands and years of work in Baptist and Wolfson Emergency Departments) are rooted in this experience.
After graduate school, I also presented research at the annual Southeastern Psychological Association on Adolescent Sex Offenders and the MMPI-A. I have been trained to administer comprehensive psychological evaluations under supervision of several psychologists and suicide risk assessments with DJJ. I also presented an extensive literature review of psychology and treatment for chronic pain. As noted, I have a recent interest in obtaining certifications and more specialized training in trauma and sleep disorders.
